Abuja’s notorious and most dangerous spots exposed

The Federal Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled names of dangerous spots within Abuja city centre, where hoodlums ply their trade.

According to statistics released by the FCT Administration, through one of its agencies, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Berger’s roundabout, Maitama District, Mabushi, Gwarinpa, Apo roundabout, Area 1 & 3, Galadimawa, Kubwa express and Wuse 2, are the top dangerous spots identified in the city centre.

The statistics showed that the hoodlums disguise as taxi drivers and also operate around AYA junction, Airport Road, Nicon junction and Utako/Jabi axis.

It was also discovered that the hoodlums use uncompleted buildings, highway with speed breakers, pedestrian bridges, crowded markets, parks and deserted streets as their hideouts.

According to the crime statistics released, about 9,350 attacks have been carried out in private properties, while 2,984 offences have been carried out against persons.


It has been  revealed that uncompleted buildings which the FCT Administration has put at about 500 scattered across the city, are now safe havens for kidnappers who keep their victims in these places.

Further findings showed that the popular Wuse 2, specifically Banex junction, is the epicenter of sale of hard drugs in the city, despite the presence of heavy security agents in the vicinity.

Minister of FCT, Muhammad Bello, at a recent media briefing, told newsmen that his administration was aware of activities of kidnappers in the city who use uncompleted buildings as their operational bases.

He had noted that his administration was working to ensure that names of owners of the identified uncompleted buildings will soon be published so that they can given a time frame, within which to complete their houses.

Bello’s predecessor, Bala Mohammed, made a similar promise four years ago when he claimed that there were over 400 identified uncompleted buildings within Abuja city centre.

In a recent chat with our correspondent, spokesman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abuja command, Mr. Peter Adegbe, said several arrests have been made around Banex junction in Wuse 2, but lamented that the culprits, when released, usually return to site.

He said lack of operational manpower was responsible for their inability to curb the menace in Abuja city centre.
