Northern elders reply Jonathan, say sitting leaders are like pick-pockets

Image
Ambassador Maitama Sule-led Northern Elders Forum (NEF) yesterday hit back at President Goodluck Jonathan for describing some elder statesmen as touts. Addressing the press at his Zaria farm yesterday, the spokesman of NEF, Professor Ango Abdullahi said, even some sitting leaders were worse than pick-pockets in motor parks, adding that, President Jonathan shouldn’t have made such abusive statement on the nation’s statesmen, who fought for the unity of the country. Professor Abdullahi, who is also a member of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also tongue-lashed the Tanko Yakasai-led Northern Elders Council (NEC), saying the group lacked principle and couldnot speak for the generality of Nigerians. The former Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) vice chancellor and Special Adviser on Agriculture during President Obasanjo’s administration said, NEF was more focused and committed to the political well-being of Northerners and Nigerians in general. According to him: “President Jon...

Oil price crash: World Bank urges Nigeria, others to rebuild fiscal buffers

Image
Nigeria and members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) battling weaker export prospects, an impending rise in global interest rates, and fragile financial market sentiment have been urged to rebuild their fiscal buffers to support economic activity in case of a sustained growth slowdown. The World Bank Grou p in its latest edition of Global Economic Prospects released on Tuesday, advised developing economies facing lower oil prices that the development offers them a timely opportunity to rebuild their buffers. It acknowledged that countries with elevated domestic debt or inflation and monetary policy options to deal with a potential slowdown are constrained, stressing that in the foreseeable future, such countries may need to employ fiscal stimulus measures to support growth. But many developing countries have less fiscal space now than they did prior to 2008, having used fiscal stimulus then even as private debt levels have risen substantially...

One week after Boko Haram attack, corpses litter Baga

Image
From TIMOTHY OLANREWAJU, Maiduguri Hundreds of corpses of slain residents of border town of Baga, north of Borno State, still littered the streets and nearby bushes of the restive community barely a week after Boko Haram attacked the area. The District Head, Alhaji Baba Abba Hassan, said yesterday in Maiduguri that it was difficult to ascertain the actual figure of those killed, but stated that hundreds of corpses still lay on the streets and bushes of the fishing town located along the Lake Chad Basin area. Hassan also denied the report of a second attack on the town by Boko Haram and casualty figure of 2,000 people killed as reported by some international media, as outrageous. He insisted that hundreds of people were killed in last Saturday’s attack on Baga, but insisted the 2,000 figure given was unrealistic. He said there is no fresh attack on Baga as reported. The district head said many women and children were the victims, adding that the ins...

PDP Deviating From Issue-Based Campaign

Image
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over what he called deviation from an issue-based election campaigns to calling of names. Mr Tunde Bank-Anthony on Friday condemned the director of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign, Fani Kayode, for insisting that President Buhari was part of the issues that the party would focus on during the campaign. “I believe this should be an issue based election. The focus of what President Jonathan said would be emphasised on has been deviated from. “I can’t sit down here bashing the President as Fani kayode did,” he said. Mr Bank-Anthony said the APC had maintained an issue based campaign, listing the areas that the party had focused on as education, Nigerian economy and the level of corruption and impunity in the society. “The main issues are what are we going to do to transform the society for better. “One of the things that are uppermost in the nation today is corruption...

Jonathan shedding crocodile tears over Nigeria’s polarisation –APC

Image
All Progressives Congress (APC) has said President Goodluck Jonathan is only shedding crocodile tears with his lamentation over the fact that the country has become more divided along religious and ethnic lines today than at anytime in its history. ‘’Mr. President, there is no point being sanctimonious about an issue for which you bear the most responsibility. You are the most divisive leader in the history of Nigeria, having ceaselessly exploited the country’s fault lines for political gains,’’ the party said in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. It said President Jonathan was the first leader to have turned the house of worship to a political arena, using the pulpit to make political and policy statements and making a show of what should ordinarily be a personal religious affair. The APC said the president’s belated lamentation was aimed at pulling the wool over the eyes of Nigerians with a view to extrac...

Don’t bank on MEND’s endorsement, Jonathan tells Buhari

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan has told his opponent in the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, not to be carried away by the purported endorsement by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), saying he has the backing of Niger Deltans to return to office. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati in a statement, said the president was amused by the vituperations against him following MEND’s endorsement of Buhari, describing it as mischievous, baseless and deliberately styled to denigrate the good works of the president. He said it was regrettable that rather than show remorse for the terrorist acts against his fatherland for which he was serving a term of imprisonment in South Africa, Henry Okah, had continued to pursue a pointless personal vendetta against President Jonathan who had been advancing and protecting the interests of the people of the Niger Delta which Okah and his group threa...

2,000 dead after renewed attack by Boko Haram on Nigerian town

Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram have attacked the northeastern town of Baga for the second time in a week, leaving bodies littering the streets, according to an official. Unconfirmed estimates by victims’ relatives put the death toll from violence in and around Baga on Thursday and on January 3rd as high as 2,000, said Musa Bukar, chairman of local government for the Kukawa district, which includes Baga. The dead are “littered on the streets and surrounding bushes”, said Mr Bukar, speaking from a camp in the city of Maiduguri that is sheltering people who have fled the attacks. On January 3rd, Boko Haram captured the headquarters of a multinational military force in Baga set up to combat the insurgency. In October, Nigerian authorities said they had agreed to a ceasefire with the group, which has killed thousands in its attempts to impose Islamic law on the country. Since then, violence in the the north has continued unabated. On Wednesday a man claimin...
