PDP Deviating From Issue-Based Campaign
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over what he called deviation from an issue-based election campaigns to calling of names.
Mr Tunde Bank-Anthony on Friday condemned the director of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign, Fani Kayode, for insisting that President Buhari was part of the issues that the party would focus on during the campaign.
“I believe this should be an issue based election. The focus of what President Jonathan said would be emphasised on has been deviated from.
“I can’t sit down here bashing the President as Fani kayode did,” he said.
Mr Bank-Anthony said the APC had maintained an issue based campaign, listing the areas that the party had focused on as education, Nigerian economy and the level of corruption and impunity in the society.
“The main issues are what are we going to do to transform the society for better.
“One of the things that are uppermost in the nation today is corruption.
“I am a well travelled Nigerian and I have not see so many private jets packed in an airport as it is packed in Nigeria,” the member of the APC said.
He further pointed out the need to look into the funding and training of security agencies, especially the State Security Service.
“What does it take us to fund our state security service? What do you expect from our DSS? What is their level of intelligence collection?
“Let us be focused about our security service performance. we should see their budget.”
President Jonathan in his campaign speech in Lagos on Thursday made reference to the military administration of General Muhammadu Buhari, the APC’s presidential candidate, insisting that during his tenure not even a rifle was bought for the Nigerian military
Mr Bank-Anthony dismissed the claim, insisting that General Buhari, being an Infantry Commander at that time, could not have led the military regime without procuring military arms.
He further pointed out that the APC’s presidential candidate should not be judged by the fact that he led a military regime and as such lacked good credential for a democratic government.
Taking a swipe on the current administration of President Jonathan, he said that the economic growth they claimed had been recorded in the regime could not be felt or touched.
“We want something that we can feel or touch. The job they said they have created, they should tell us in what sectors these jobs were created.”
He further insisted that the rule of law that was felt during the regime of late President Yar’ Adua has been overshadowed by the increasing rate of impunity in the nation.
He cited the incident in Ekiti State, explaining that the minority had taken over the leadership of the House of Assembly, which he said was against the rule of law.
“During the late President Yar’ Adua’s tenure the rule of law was still in operation but now it is not.”
According to him, the Governor of Ekiti State had intimidated the House of Assembly members, leaving the minority to occupy the House.
“Who is occupying Ekiti today? Is it the 19 or the seven?”
He stressed that what General Buhari was asking for “is an appointment”, and said that he had been part of the individuals that had advised APC members, as part of his contribution to ensure a peaceful electoral process, to be clear on issues.
